How to Properly Clean the Gymnasium Floor

Have you ever wondered what it takes to clean a gymnasium floor? They never seem to get dirty enough, especially when schools make it a requirement for only sneakers to be worn on the floor. You can’t use just any type of cleaning chemicals or materials on the floor when cleaning. You need to follow the do’s and don’ts outlined in this post when caring for an epoxy floor coating system.

The Do’s

The gymnasium floor should be swept with a dust mop at least daily that has been correctly treated. The mop will help remove dust, dirt, and other particles that can cause damage to the floor. You will need to keep water from getting on the floor. This can be difficult during basketball season, which is why you will need players and team managers to use towels to mop up water spills or sweat puddles.

If you find marks on the gym floor you will be able to remove them, but just be sure to do so very carefully. You will want to use a floor cleaner that works well with the finish of the floor. Using any other type of cleaner can damage your epoxy floor coating system.

The Don’ts

Make sure tape is never used on the floor of your gymnasium. Even if you need to tape down papers that have basketball drills on them, do not do it. Simply lay them on the floor. Tape can damage the floor when it is removed.

Do not try to make any repairs or modifications to the gymnasium floor without first contacting the company that installed it. When cleaning the floor, do not use a machine that utilizes scrubbing equipment. This can cause quite a bit of damage in a short period.

Take all of these tips into consideration when cleaning your gymnasium floor.

How to Care for an Epoxy Floor

Epoxy floors are quite popular these days. They can be found just about anywhere, including in school cafeterias, gymnasiums, commercial buildings, and many other places. Here are some important tips for you to follow when caring for your epoxy floor coatings.

Sweep Daily

Whoever is in charge of your maintenance department should make sure that the epoxy floors are swept daily. Sweeping the floors daily helps to keep damaging debris from sitting on them overnight. Daily sweeping also helps to extend the life of the floor. Use a broom that has soft bristles so it does not scratch the floors.

Wash Weekly

Wash the epoxy floors weekly. For the most part, weekly mopping of the epoxy floors will be enough to keep them in good condition. If there are some heavily trafficked areas, they might need a little extra attention with washings performed multiple times per week.

Immediately Clean Spills

It’s important to clean any and all spills as they happen. Don’t let spills linger on the epoxy floors or else they could suffer stains. Aside from damaging the floor, a spill can also be a hazard to those walking near it if not cleaned up immediately.

Treat Stains

If you come across any stains on your epoxy floor coatings, be sure to treat them appropriately. Never give stains time to set. The longer they set, the more difficult it will be to remove the stain from the epoxy floor. Follow the instructions given by your epoxy flooring installer as to how to treat stains.

No Sharp Objects

Never allow sharp objects near your epoxy floors. Do not let anyone glide, slide, pull, push, or drag any item that has sharp or pointy bottoms that can scratch or gouge the floors.

If you follow the tips outlined here your epoxy floor coatings should last for quite some time.
